Menchies
By Melissa
Every so often, I go to lunch with Shawn Nakamoto of Kamehameha Schools, and sometimes we stumble on something new. Our recent wandering took us to Menchies, a new do-it-yourself yogurt place in Ward Warehouse.

These yogurt places have become all the rage recently. At a time when people are focused on "it's all about me," why wouldn't they love to eat at a place where they can customize a dessert to their specific desires?

From what I understand, we were very lucky to come at an off time with no line. Very clean and bright!

They have almost a dozen choices of yogurt, which you can opt to mix in your bowl. You can even take a taste (within reason) of flavors you are considering. They have tart, creamy, nonfat, and light, to name a few. Shawn chose tart flavors, whereas I stayed with creamy.

Now remember: they charge 43 cents an ounce. So don't go to town loading up on the heaviest toppings! They have brownies, cookies, candy, nuts, fruits, syrups, mochi, and breakfast cereal. (Did I miss anything?) When Shawn's son visited Menchie's earlier, his order came up to about $8!

We were a little more prudent. Shawn's order, right, came up to $4.08, and mine was $4.35. This was really a dessert for us, but we agreed this was probably a good lunch substitute as well! Provided we don't load up like her son, of course.
I really enjoyed the taro, vanilla, and orange flavors. So what flavor should I try when I go back? And is there a topping that goes really well with yogurt?

Did you like the mochi? I haven't been to Menchies yet, but occasionally go to Yogurtland by Atherton Y. It used to be Volcano Joe's. There, I like the taro, green tea, and I think it was guava. Anyhow, that combo was delish. We once got yogurt, went home quickly, and added our own pieces of strawberry, peach, kiwi, and apple banana. So chinee, yeah?

Wow Melissa, when we went it was crowded. Looks like no one was dea when you went. My wife likes this place better than Yogurtland.

You're not supposed to take photos of my backside or close up's either! I love Menchies and have been wanting to go back but we're always so full after dinner.

Twofish: I did like the mochi. I was surprised, because I didn't like it in my mochi at Waiola Shave Ice.
M: I hear the lines are nuts at Menchie's and Yogurtland! But yes, I hear the same, too--many people say this place is better than Yogurtland.
Cindy: It was very clean! And not too many kids that time of day so it was nice to eat my yogurt in peace.
Shawn: I was wondering if I would get in trouble for any photos of you! You're in good shape....It would be different if was me!

I guess I don't look too fat in the backside photo but the up close shows my double chin. Guess it's from eating too much yogurt! Didn't realize you put a link to my blog which hasn't been updated in a week. Now I feel pressured to post something. I've been avoiding it because I really haven't had anything interesting to rant about!

I've never been to Menchies yet, but now that I know they have nonfat yogurt I'm there!! Or maybe the light will be good also? I'm not too big on all kinds of toppings so does that mean I'll get more yogurt for my buck

GRAPES! Grapes go well with yogurt.

I've been a couple times. I even bought gift cards for Christmas.
I like all the tart flavors. Natural w/blueberries or strawberries. Remember high school days when we had to get our Yami yogurt?

Shawn, if you need extra things to rant about, I have more than enough! ha ha
OK Gail next week, we go!
Craig, I never heard of grapes with yogurt! U are so eccentric. hahahaha
Moki, I do remember the Yami! And you know what? I think I must have OD'd on it back then. Yami Yogurt (at least, the kind we ate) was more tart. So when I tried the tart flavors at Menchies, I was immediately turned off and thought of Yami. Maybe I'm more of a "Penguins" kind of yogurt eater.

Looks like there are less lines than Yogurtland!

Menchies is a Saturday must for our family. I like the tart flavors. My usual is half lychee half plain then put on lots of shredded coconut, crushed butterfinger, fresh strawberries, and then azuki beans. Menchies is way better than Yogurtland. Menchies yogurt seems to be less watery. I stay away from the creamy flavors because if you want creamy just eat ice cream. Home made ice cream with my Lello gelato maker. This device was invented by God; He used it create wonderful ice cream using the fruits that He created earlier in the week. Oh I just picked up a bunch of lilikoi from the backyard. If I can find room in my freezer I will be making lilikoi ice cream soon.

I love Menchies. It's the bomb. Although like you said, people need to be careful and not go to town. A friend of mine that I went with ended up with a $15 bowl. Surprisingly, he finished with. I think he had the stoner munchies.
