Hawaii's Woodshow
By Melissa
Every year, woodworkers from across the state feature their best work in a juried show called Hawaii's Woodshow. While it's cool that the woodworkers are local, it's neat to know that the wood they use is from trees that have been planted in Hawaii, as well.

Photos from a couple of last year's entries.

If you really like what you see, you can even buy a piece for yourself. The wood products that I've seen over the years have ranged from kitchen spoons and hair combs to jewelry boxes and bowls; there are also cribs, chairs, bureaus, and instruments. If you're really into it, there is a wide range of simple wood art.
I won't lie, it can get expensive--hey, these are wood pieces made by local artisans!--but you come away knowing that you supported local people making unique items out of local products.

If nothing else, just go to look! If you go on the first night--tonight--you may even get to meet the artists.
Hope to see you there!

Wow, nice.
Hey Melissa, it was nice meeting you the other week. Last day in class. Heading home tonight. I'm sure they'll bring me back one day.

Is this the same one that was at the Convention Center last November? If so, it sure is early this year. I wrote about the November show and posted pictures in my Wanders blog back then. http://leftfieldwander.blogspot.com/2008/11/na-laau-o-hawaii-hawaiis-woodshow-2008.html
I'll have to check it out!

Didn't make this show, though I try to go on opening nights and see who the people are behind the creativity. Had to nap, and then went to Costco to pick up my meds, but tried the massage chairs and figured I'd pay when they started to turn off some lights.
Using local wood is good, esp when "recycling" wood from people's cut-down trees, like the person posting on Oahu craigslist for free in Manoa - that wood is available from cut tree tomorrow, Saturday. Would be a shame if it got shredded.
