Meeting Dean Karnazes
By Melissa
I didn't do a whole lot today that was blog-worthy, except one thing: Go to the Bay to Breakers Expo and pick up my packet. While there, I got to meet the Ultimate Ultra Marathon Man, Dean Karnazes.

Most regular people don't know who he is. Heck, even *I* forgot who he was till another runner told me! I had read a couple of articles about him in the past and if you mention his name among hard-core runners, he's a virtual god. He's run 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 consecutive days, for one thing. He's also done ultra marathons (anything over 26 miles; usually 60 to 100 miles in one crack), but has never done Honolulu's HURT 100. We're still waiting for him to enter!
Anyway, I'm bad at meeting celebrities. He clearly wanted to meet every fan and make a connection, but I was pretty much speechless. Hopefully when I meet him again (hopefully when I'm working the aid station at the HURT 100 in Honolulu!), I can have something meaningful to say.
Oh yeah, Dean is an advocate for fitness and good diet. He'd probably flinch if he saw what I had had for breakfast at Tartine's Bakery:

Tartine's famous morning buns, made with their croissant dough and a magical blend of cinnamon and orange zest. This was served so hot, I had to carefully peel the flaky layers off to start eating.

Chocolate banana tart with a caramel filling. Ed doesn't like the caramel at Tartine's because they seem to scorch it; I like the nuttiness of the flavor.
The line for Tartine's went down the street today, mostly because it's a Saturday. It was impossible to get a seat, so Ed and I took our places at a counter at the window....facing the line. When we plopped our pastries down on the counter, the starving crowd outside gasped and gawked, and they all watched us eat as if we were animals on display. It was crazy! The experience made me think of Little Oven and how crazy it gets there. Now I know what it's like for all the non-twitter customers.
Anyway, time to go to bed. Watch my tweets from Bay to Breakers!
