Tonight, thousands of you will be coming to Aloha Tower Marketplace to enjoy our annual fireworks extravaganza. I tell everyone that since the shells are shot off a barge in Honolulu Harbor, this is the closest you'll ever get to fireworks in your life! (You could watch it from home, but it's really not the same, trust me. Also our pyrotechnician, Bruce, gets really creative with some low-lying special effects that you can only see if you're standing here with me.)

So what goes into a fireworks show? It lasts 12 minutes, but the buildup can take up to a year. We work closely with Big Island-based Hawaii Explosives and the radio station (in this case, the COX radio group) to select songs that are contemporary and meaningful to the event at hand. As we sift through the various MP3 files, we consider the highs, lows, and flow of the fireworks that might synch with the music. Once we finalize the file, Bruce crafts an exciting show, not just fireworks set to music. His special effects and experimental surprises draw ooohs, aaaahs and gasps that can be heard in the middle of the harbor, and he gets off on that.

We also work closely with the radio station to find entertainment that fits our budget, and fits our sound requirements. In the Center Atrium at 6:45 p.m., we have Darren Benitez and friends playing high-energy music to get the crowd amped up. On the Pier 9 stage, it's best to have solo acts instead of groups simply because of the simplicity in set up. So this year, at 8:20 p.m, we have ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro playing us up to the fireworks.

What you really don't get to see is the teamwork behind the scenes. The engineering and housekeeping departments work hand in hand to make sure everything is set up (and broken down) in a timely manner with the least amount of impact to the property. The parking department works out all the logistics needed to support the crush of customers coming for such a big event on a long weekend. (For parking options, click here.) One of the biggest needs that you don't immediately see, though, is the security. Our security team is well-organized and systematically works the property to help our guests stay safe. They also work with the state harbor security, coast guard, fire department, HPD and the sheriff's department to coordinate efforts. How many security personnel do you think is actually on property tonight?

I could go on for hours about what happens operationally behind the scenes, but that might ruin it for you! The main thing is that you, the customer, leaves having a good time.

After you watch our fireworks tonight, let me know what you thought of the event!

Speaking of having a good time....by the time you read this, I will have already gone to KITV with Gordon Biersch (call time was 4:30 a.m.). If you're early enough, you can tune in to KCCN or KINE to hear me talking to Billy V. and Lina & Pipi! These are fun people to work with; I guess you have to be if you're going to work that early in the morning!
